Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 large apple, peeled and finely diced
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Wash and dice your apple into small, uniform pieces to ensure even distribution throughout the treats.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the beaten egg, applesauce, honey, and water until well combined. The mixture should be smooth and slightly sweet-smelling.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the whole wheat flour, rolled oats, and cinnamon. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until a thick dough forms.
  4. Gently fold the diced apples into the dough, ensuring even distribution. The apple pieces should be small enough to prevent choking but large enough to provide texture.
  5. Using a tablespoon or small cookie scoop, drop rounded portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about an inch apart. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the treats are golden brown and firm to the touch.
  6. Allow the baked apple fritter dog treats to cool completely on the baking sheet before removing. This cooling period helps them achieve the perfect chewy texture while preventing them from crumbling when handled.

Notes

Store in airtight container for up to one week or freeze for longer storage. Serve 1-2 treats per day for medium dogs, adjusting portions based on dog's size and activity level. Remove apple seeds and core as they contain harmful compounds. Avoid sugar, artificial sweeteners, and extra spices like nutmeg which are dangerous for dogs. Can be stuffed into puzzle toys or Kong toys for mental stimulation.
