Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 large carrot, finely grated
  • 1/2 cup cooked ground beef, drained and cooled
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons beef broth (low sodium)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Grate the carrot using the finest holes on your box grater. Make sure your cooked ground beef has cooled completely and any excess grease has been drained.
  2. Combine the whole wheat flour and rolled oats in a large mixing bowl. Whisk them together to distribute evenly.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg until well combined. Add the beef broth and olive oil, whisking until smooth.
  4. Add the grated carrot and cooled ground beef to the dry ingredients, tossing gently to coat. Pour the wet mixture over everything and stir until a firm dough forms. If too dry, add water one teaspoon at a time. If too wet, sprinkle in a little extra flour.
  5. Roll the dough between your palms into walnut-sized balls, then flatten them slightly on the prepared baking sheet. Space them about an inch apart.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the edges are golden brown and the treats feel firm to the touch.
  7. Let the treats cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Cool completely before storage.

Notes

Store in airtight container in refrigerator for up to one week or freeze for three months. Make sure cooked ground beef is completely cooled and drained. Use low sodium broth only. Can substitute ground beef with cooked chicken or turkey, and carrot with sweet potato. Bring refrigerated treats to room temperature before serving.
