Ingredients

  • 2 large carrots, grated (about 1 cup)
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup natural peanut butter (xylitol-free)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the egg, peanut butter, olive oil, and water until smooth and creamy.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and oats to ensure even distribution.
  4. Add the grated carrots to your wet ingredients first, stirring gently to coat them completely.
  5. Gradually fold in the flour mixture until a soft dough forms. If too wet, add flour one tablespoon at a time.
  6. Using your hands or a small cookie scoop, form the dough into small balls about the size of a walnut.
  7. Place balls on prepared baking sheet, spacing them about an inch apart. Gently flatten each ball with your palm or the back of a fork.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the edges are golden brown and the treats feel firm to the touch.
  9. Let treats rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Always ensure peanut butter is xylitol-free as this sweetener is toxic to dogs. Don't overbake as treats become too hard for smaller dogs. Make treats appropriately sized for your dog - smaller portions are better for training and digestion. Store in airtight container in refrigerator for up to one week or freeze for up to three months. Grate carrots night before to save time. Can double batch and freeze half for convenience.
