Making the Treats
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats and chicken broth. Let this mixture sit for 10 minutes until the oats absorb most of the liquid and become tender.
- Add the whole wheat flour to the oat mixture and stir until you get a shaggy dough. Crack the egg into the bowl, followed by the melted coconut oil and honey if using. Mix everything together until a cohesive dough forms. The texture should be slightly sticky but manageable.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll it to about ¼-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters or simply cut into small squares with a knife. Keep the pieces small enough for your dog's size.
- Place the treats on your prepared baking sheet, spacing them about an inch apart. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the edges turn golden brown and the treats feel firm to the touch. They should sound slightly hollow when tapped. Let them cool completely on the baking sheet before offering one to your pup.
Notes
Don't use regular chicken broth with high sodium content. Avoid rolling dough too thin. Never add garlic or onion powder as they're toxic to dogs. Always let treats cool completely before serving. Store in airtight container in refrigerator for up to one week or freeze for up to three months. Break into smaller pieces for puppies and training rewards. Can substitute whole wheat flour with oat flour by grinding rolled oats, or use almond/coconut flour for grain-free option.
