Making the Treats
- Preheat your waffle iron to medium heat. Don't use butter or cooking spray since the applesauce provides enough moisture.
- In a medium bowl, whisk the egg until smooth. Add the applesauce and stir until well combined.
- Gradually fold in the oat flour, stirring just until a thick batter forms. The consistency should be slightly thicker than pancake batter but still spreadable.
- Spoon about 1/4 cup of batter onto the center of each waffle section. Don't overfill as the batter will spread as it cooks.
- Close the waffle iron gently and cook for 3-4 minutes, until steam stops escaping and the waffles feel firm to the touch. They should be golden brown.
- Transfer the cooked waffles to a wire cooling rack and cool completely before serving.
- Break larger waffles into appropriately sized pieces for your dog's breed and size.
Notes
Cool completely before serving to avoid burning dog's mouth. Don't use applesauce with added sugar or artificial sweeteners. Cook on medium heat to avoid treats becoming too hard. Can substitute oat flour with blended rolled oats, mashed banana for applesauce, or sweet potato puree. Store in refrigerator for up to one week or freeze for up to three months. Can be made without waffle iron by baking on parchment-lined sheet at 350°F for 12-15 minutes.
