Ingredients

  • 1 can (6 oz) wild-caught salmon in water, drained
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (or oat flour for sensitive stomachs)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup water (add gradually as needed)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, mash the drained salmon with a fork until it reaches a chunky consistency. Beat the egg and add it to the salmon along with the Greek yogurt and melted coconut oil.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and chopped parsley.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the salmon mixture, stirring until a slightly sticky dough forms. Add water one tablespoon at a time if the dough feels too dry.
  5. Roll the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use small cookie cutters or simply cut into bite-sized squares with a knife.
  6. Place treats on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about an inch apart. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the edges are golden brown and the treats feel firm to touch.
  7. Let the salmon dog treats cool completely on the baking sheet before offering them to your dog.

Notes

Store in airtight container in refrigerator for up to one week, or freeze for up to three months. Serve as training rewards or stuff into Kong toys. Avoid salmon packed in oil or with added salt. Don't overbake as treats will become too hard. Skip seasoning or garlic powder which can be toxic to dogs. Make smaller portions for safety and training purposes. Treats should comprise no more than 10% of dog's daily caloric intake.
