Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 3 strips cooked bacon, finely chopped (reserve 2 tablespoons grease)
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons reserved bacon grease
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Method

  1. Cook bacon strips in a skillet over medium heat until crispy. Remove bacon and chop finely, reserving 2 tablespoons of the rendered fat.
  2. Preheat your oven to 350°F. In a large mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour with the chopped bacon pieces.
  3. Whisk together the egg, chicken broth, reserved bacon grease, and honey in a separate bowl.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the flour and bacon combination. Mix with a wooden spoon until a firm dough forms. If the mixture seems too dry, add chicken broth one tablespoon at a time.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to ¼-inch thickness. Use small cookie cutters or cut into squares with a knife.
  6. Place treats on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them ½-inch apart. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and firm to the touch. Cool completely before serving.

Notes

Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, or freeze for up to three months. Serve one treat per 20 pounds of body weight daily. Avoid using raw bacon or excessive salt. Don't overbake as treats will become too hard. Skip seasonings like garlic or onion powder which are toxic to dogs. Great for puzzle toys or training rewards.
